Damian Green YouTube Question and Answer

We have provided details of the question and answer session below.

Question

There are plenty of talented migrants in the UK with high earnings and exceptional qualifications. Do you really wish to throw them out? (Question from Anuj Agrawal)

Answer

“No, we want people with high quality jobs and high quality skills coming to this country and staying in this country but actually those that have come under the old Tier 1 (HSMP) skilled route often we find aren’t employed at all or aren’t doing highly skilled jobs. So what we are having now is that those who have got a job offer of a highly skilled graduate level job can certainly stay, are very welcome to stay, but those that haven’t got that job offer can’t stay. And those that are already here will be able to apply for a job under this new route.”

Question

What are the options for a working class, white collar American who makes over 50K GBP per year, and wants to contribute to the UK economy? (Question from Brooke Steinberg)

Answer

“Well I’m not at all interested in your background whether blue collar, white collar, working class, middle class or anything else. Anyone who has got the talents and skills to make Britain a better place is welcome to Britain so in your case you can apply under our new system. There will be a limit on the number of visas issued but people who have got a job offer for a highly skilled job will still be welcome in this country.”

Question

Why do the Governments reforms of the student visa system appear to punish and deter genuine students instead of targeting the individuals that abuse the system? (Question from Daniel Rose-Troup)

Answer

“We’re absolutely not out to punish or deter genuine students, we want genuine students coming to genuine institutions to study in a genuine way. What our proposals do is to drive out the very widespread abuse in the system both in terms of bogus colleges that were not offering a proper education and indeed bogus students those who are coming here with a student visa where their main intent was to work. But genuine students at genuine universities and colleges won’t be affected.”

Question

I am a professor of computer science. I regularly need to employ specialist staff who are quite likely not to be from the EU. What can I do? (Question from Steve Linton)

Answer

“Well if you can’t employ a UK worker then obviously you need to look abroad under the skilled worker route and we have specifically designed it to help people in academic institutions who are looking for researchers. The number of points you’re allocated is actually massively increased if you are that kind of academic researcher so it should be easier for employer like you to find the right person from anywhere in the world.”

Question

What measures will be in place to check up on those who are already here under the Tier 2 (intra company transfer) route? (Question from Nick Moore)

Answer

“Everyone has to obey the rules and I know that there is a lot of people concerned that the ICT route has been exploited and is being exploited at the moment and we are trying very hard to crack down on anyone who is evading the rules that way so all I can say to you or anyone else watching this is that if you have evidence that this is going on let the UKBA know. If you can let us know that we will investigate and if people are breaking the laws then we will enforce those laws.”

Question

Why has the Government implemented a cap on economic immigration before it has reliable data? (Question from @NiklasSmith)

Answer

Well we do have reliable data particular on those who come into Britain and work. We know exactly who they are, they need a visa, they need a Biometric Residence Permit, so that a part of the system where the data is particularly reliable. And I think very few people in Britain would argue that there hasn’t been a massive inflow of Immigration for work purposes and other purposes over the last few years and the British public is overwhelmingly behind the thought that this needs to be better controlled so that’s what our policies are designed to achieve.

The UK Border Agency and the Immigration Minister are expected to continue to use websites such as YouTube to communicate more effectively with the public on the issue of Immigration and of course migrants who are subject to the system. The UK Border Agency has increased the output of news articles available on its website and has also started using things such as Twitter to improve communication with the general public. During last year’s Leaders Debate the subject of Immigration was consistently one of the most talked about subjects.
