NHS Trust Rolls Out Tablet Computers

Jawad Chaudhry, Project Manager, said that “The aim with the tablet rollout was to improve clinical care, and we certainly did that. The number of patients seen by staff with tablet computers increased by 20 – 30% per week because staff didn’t need to travel back to the office between appointments.”

Technological improvements in the National Health Service (NHS) stand to play a crucial role in helping hard pressed NHS Trusts to achieve aggressive efficiency savings. A recent report conducted by GS1 UK and Nursing Standard found that the National Health Service (NHS) spends £1 Billion per annum hunting for missing equipment. The survey also found that nurses, on average, spend 23 days per annum searching for medication, patient records and medical devices each year. The majority of the 861 nurses surveyed believe that RFID tags (as used in supermarkets) could help them significantly improve efficiency. Real time stock level control, electronic records to track the location of equipment, bar coded patient wristbands were also cited as areas that if addressed would lead to significant efficiency savings. Many of these technological advances could be made possible through the use of tablet computers.
