UKBA Biometric Database to be used for Identity Scheme

The Department of Work and Pensions Customer Information Systems (CIS) database, which has links to numerous local and governmental departments, is used to store personal information for everyone with a National Insurance (NI) number. After assessment and careful consideration it was decided that over expansion of the CIS database could cause future issues.

The new system will be built upon the UK Border Agency’s Identity and Asylum Fingerprinting System which stores fingerprints and facial biometrics for passport applicants & visa applicants (a £265 million project awarded to IBM). The Identity and Passport Service (IPS) is responsible for delivering the controversial Identity Card scheme which the Conservatives have said may be scrapped if they win power at the next General Election due to be held later this year.
