75% Immigration Cut?

The announcement was made following the release of a Declaration on Immigration from the Cross Party Group on Balanced Migration on the 6th January 2010. In the declaration Parliamentarians from both major political parties urged Gordon Brown and David Cameron to place in this year’s party election manifestos a firm commitment to do what is necessary to prevent UK population reaching 70 million by 2029. Speaking on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show Mr Cameron said that 70 million was “too much for public services, such as hospitals and schools to cope with”.

What is Net Migration?

Net Migration is the number of people coming to live in the UK minus those that move abroad. In 2007 Net Migration stood at 233,000, in 2008 this figure reduced to 163,000 on the back of the economic downturn. In 2009 Net Migration is once again expected to decrease due to many Poles & Australians moving home.

Where has the 70 Million Population Prediction come from?

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) recently predicted that UK Population would rise to 70 million by 2029 if peak migration to the UK between 2005 & 2008 was sustained every year for the next 20 years.

Will the reduction be achieved?

It will be difficult for the Conservatives to limit the number of people coming to work in the United Kingdom due to the free movement of labour within the European Economic Area (EEA). Any reduction would be borne by those Non EEA nationals migrating to the UK under the Points Based System (PBS) however the bulk are:

  • Highly skilled migrants under Tier 1 who contribute massively to the UK economy
  • Skilled Migrants under Tier 2 who are desperately required by UK licensed Employers unable to find skilled resident workers, AND
  • Tier 4 Students whose presence is extremely important to higher education in the United Kingdom
