Tier 1 & Tier 5 Migrants will require Biometric Residence Permits

The biometric residence permits, which are already required by Tier 2 migrants, will replace the stickers (known as ‘vignettes’) which Tier 1 and Tier 5 (Temporary Worker) migrants currently hold in their passports. In the future these migrants will be required to provide biometric information including a digital photograph and fingerprints before being allowed to proceed to visa application. The changes are expected to be introduced from the 14th December 2010.

Over the last few years an increasing number of migrants have been required to provide biometric information before proceeding to visa application, due to concerns over fake travel documents. For a number of years now British Nationals applying for a new passport have been issued with a biometric passport which is supposed not only to improve identity checks but also the speed that an individual can move through UK border checks. Biometric passports can be used with automated security posts and the iris recognition system however at many major airports in the UK these machines stand idle while long waits develop.
