Mixed response to the Governments Spending Review from the REC

The Chair of the Recruitment and Employment Confederations Engineering and Technical sector group, Philip Higgins, said that “In what is a difficult economic climate, the investment in the transport infrastructure, in science and engineering research is welcome news for the manufacturing and engineering sector. Hopefully, this will in turn kick start the nuclear new build programme and transport upgrades. Given the economic climate and the in backdrop of spending cuts, the creation of 75,000 additional apprenticeships is also welcome news, especially as the UK still suffers from skill shortages in areas such as engineering and manufacturing. Investment in this area will also help swing the balance of the UK economy more towards production and manufacturing output of low carbon goods.”
