Google Docs Given Collaborative Highlighting Function

Peter Solderitsch, a software engineer at Google, said that \”Writing a document collaboratively in Google Docs is like playing a team sport. Its one thing to see your co-editors\’ cursors and know where they are. But to really work well together, it helps to know what they\’re about to do. Collaborative highlighting makes it easier to anticipate the changes other editors are about to make. So if someone is about to delete something on your screen or drag text somewhere else, you\’ll see them highlight that text before anything changes.

Recently KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (part of Air France-KLM) became the latest major organisation to sign up for Google Apps Premier Edition, Google’s Cloud based office suite. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines joins other enterprise level organisations such as Motorola, Cap Gemini and Rentokil in migrating to Google Apps Premier Edition.

The next few years are expected to see many more high profile organisations migrate to cloud based technologies including Google Apps and Salesforce.com (a Cloud based enterprise Customer Relationship Management tool). At the moment many organisations are seeking to reduce overheads and improve Information Technology capabilities. Cloud based computing models offer companies a straightforward and cost effective way to achieve these goals without significant complexity. Office packages and communication services are expected to see the biggest shift in the next few years due to their relative simplicity to deliver.

However, in order for take up to be improved Google will have to improve further the functionality of Google Docs, which at present offers relatively basic word processor, spreadsheet and presentation capabilities etc. Unless Google can improve the applications they will continue to lose ground to more advanced desktop applications such as Microsoft Office. The economic downturn of the last few years has encouraged more and more multinational enterprises to turn to online applications in a bid to improve functionality and reduce costs. Google stands in a fantastic position to gain a significant amount of market share in the future.
