Social Media technology should be incorporated into IT service management

According to Mark Blowers, lead analyst at Ovum \”IT users are coming to expect similar levels of interaction in their corporate lives as they do in their online life as private consumers. Social media tools can work well in IT service management, especially in bringing about improvements in the service provided to users. Delaying an organisation\’s participation in incorporating social media into IT service management-related functions could be a big mistake. As IT service desks increasingly move up the agenda in terms of importance for organisations, integration of social media will be seen by employees as a must-have, and a lack of availability could generate inefficiencies, such as workarounds, creating compliance issues.\”

Wi-Fi to be rolled out on London Tube network

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, said that \”The rollout of Wi-Fi technology across platforms and public areas of our tube stations will finally allow Londoners to use mobile devices to pick up their emails, access social media sites while they traverse our subterranean network. We are inviting companies to bid for this before next June, which would mean that people will be able to keep up to date with the British medal tally at the 2012 games when underground.”

The announcement is yet another example of how the Olympic Games will help to spur the economy and in particular the UK IT sector which may see 5,000 IT and Telecoms jobs created over the next few years.

Capita signs 5 new outsourcing deals worth £244 million

The 5 outsourcing deals are:

1.    English Heritage – an outsourcing and IT contract deal
2.    MetLife – a 10 year, £120 million deal which will include IT support and life and pensions administration for financial services
3.    London Boroughs or Bromley and Lewisham – A shared services agreement
4.    National Policing Improvement Agency – Participation in the organisations digital interviewing framework
5.    Teachers Pensions Scheme – £80 million deal as the organisations preferred administration supplier

The Chief Executive of the Capita Group, Paul Pindar, said that \”The need for our public sector clients to achieve substantial cost savings and for private sector clients to increase their efficiency to remain competitive offers significant opportunities for the group going forward.\”

Last year the UK Government was urged to outsource expensive Information Technology processes to India in an effort to significantly reduce costs and generally improve efficiency and performance. Many Government departments have been under real pressure to reduce operating costs by as much as 40% in order to save much needed cash. These developments have prompted Ovum, an Information Communication Technology advisory company to urge Government Departments to turn to Indian outsourcers to achieve savings.

Edward Thomas, a senior analyst at Ovum, said that \”In the past the government struggled because of the political implications of outsourcing to India, but as it looks at costs with greater scrutiny I wouldn\’t be surprised if we start seeing more contracts coming from this area. Since the recession, companies have become more wary about signing long-term outsourcing contracts. There has also been a trend to using multiple vendors as businesses become more savvy about how they use outsourcing, so rather than sign one large deal, they\’ll sign three smaller ones with more specialist vendors”.

Critical Shortage of IT Security Professionals

The Chair of the Cyber Security Challenge Talent Management Committee, Kevin Streater, said that \”The importance of IT to the UK\’s infrastructure has been underestimated. We need security professionals to protect the UK\’s global internet connection. For example, if a UK bank\’s infrastructure goes down, there will be huge damage to the UK economy. Only a small number of people are addressing the skills needed.

Recently the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development / KPMG Labour Market Outlook Report said that 40% of UK Employers are struggling to fill vacancies from within the European Economic Area (EEA). The report also found that 17% of employers have been prevented from recruiting Non EEA workers due to the temporary Immigration Cap, 23% of employers are recruiting Non EEA workers for engineering roles, 15% for IT positions and 7% equally for nursing and accountancy / finance positions.

The Public Policy Advisor for the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Gerwyn Davies, said that “The introduction of the temporary cap has had an impact on employers’ ability to fill vacancies and improve productivity, particularly in the National Health Service (NHS). It remains questionable whether the increase in the number of employer-related visas issued by the government for the next year will be enough to address the projected increase in the demand for migrant workers. We should not forget that the UK still has skills shortages in many key areas, nor should we forget that the number of non-EU workers amounts to the tens of thousands rather than the hundreds of thousands. So while it is right to highlight our concern about rising unemployment, we should not overlook the benefits and invaluable expertise and experience that a relatively small number of non-EU workers bring to the UK economy. Keeping out skilled non-EU workers won’t help unemployed people in the UK in the near term, but could have real and negative consequences for business and the public sector”.

A £300m+ Trading Platform Consolidation at JP Morgan

Jes Staley, the Chief Executive of JP Morgan’s Investment Bank, said that \”Having a leading technology platform in the trading and operational space is going to be critical in dealing with the regulatory waves that are coming our way.” And Dr Giles Nelson, the Deputy Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Progress Software went on to say that \”Ten years ago, the data would have been more disparate. There would have been less standardisation and the enterprise integration technology which did exist then was used less. We\’re in a better position to start some of this standardisation and reduce the number of trading systems. However, when someone has a great idea for how they can do bond pricing better there are going to be a lot more hoops to jump through, either to use one of the existing trading platforms or to buy in some technology to satisfy that need. By the time they get through the internal hoops, perhaps the opportunity in the market will have gone. They will have gone from a leader to a follower. You\’ve got to keep an eye on that.\”

The new system could see spur demand for niche IT consultants specialised in trading systems in the future and this could be good news for IT contractors in particular. Only a couple of weeks ago a leading IT Recruitment Consultancy within the Banking Sector said that highly skilled IT Contractors in particular stand to profit in the near future with many Banks unable to hire permanent workers due to a lack of skills in the permanent market. The Director of IT Recruitment at Networkers International, James Smith, told the Recruiter that “Our business has been fuelled by the financial markets by both the banking industry and insurance as well. We have been doing a lot of recruitment for those kinds of organisations. New projects are kicking off at the banks. In 2009, with the state of the economy, a lot of cuts were made but going into 2010 and now a lot of the banks and insurance houses have started new projects which they haven’t done for the last three or four years. Overall, we see continuation of steady growth for contract and permanent staff. The demand for permanent staff remains high and is higher than contract staff. Due to the lack of skills in the permanent market, there will be a shift in terms of growth on the contract front. As clients cannot find those permanent workers, they will get contractors in to work on a shorter-term basis or a project basis.”

SAP looking to help retail clients stalk customers

Stefan Gruler, the Head of Trading Industries at SAP, recently revealed that one area of focus for the firms retail strategy is to develop ‘in-memory real time data on customer behaviour’ for retail clients. What that means is companies will be able to see what their customers are buying in store and match them to their social networking profile (Twitter, Facebook etc) for comment on the product following the purchase.

Mr Gruler said that “If you look at sites such as Facebook, where you\’ve got friends talking about your products on social networking sites, recommending products and services to each other – you realise how important this data is to the business. You\’ll see people sending notes about products via Twitter, answering questions, giving recommendations – we need to find and collect this information and figure out what it means. At the end of the day, the real value of that data comes when you put intelligence into it and combine it with the right analytics system to get the right data that helps you make decisions out of that. Are we allowed to use it? That\’s the real issue at the moment.\”

Recently SAP announced record results for quarter 4 of 2010 and said that the European region performed particularly well. The company recorded a 35% increase in software revenue (to £1,3 billion), saw the number of deals made increase by 36% on quarter 4 of 2009, operating expenditure decreased by 62% and overall the company achieved a post tax profit of £1.5 billion.
Speaking of the growth in European market, Bill McDermott, Co-CEO of SAP, said that \”Emerging markets in Europe are growing fast. We are optimistic in Europe.\” The company recorded a 20% increase in software sales and software related services in Europe.

Speaking on the figures, Co-CEO Jom Hagemann Snabe said that \”We defined a winning strategy based on innovation, over consolidation. Not only can we go into new areas like on-demand, mobile and in-memory computing, but we also got our core business to grow again. In-memory computing is a true breakthrough. It\’s a complete re-thinking of the way data is stored, and allows you to scale to infinity in terms of speed and size of computing.\”

Google announces that it will create 1,000 jobs in Europe in 2011

Speaking at the Digital Life Design conference in Germany, and on the back of fourth-quarter profits of $2.54 billion, Eric Schmidt the CEO of Google announced that the company will boost its global workforce by 25% in the coming year with 6,200 new staff required across Europe, the Middle East and Africa in the year ahead. Mr Schmidt said that \”We looked at this year and in particular our prospects for growth in Europe, and our businesses globally are doing well, both our core business as well as our adjacent businesses, our \’hockey stick\’ businesses as we call them. It\’s all very, very good. We are going to invest in Europe.\”

News of any job creation is welcome, especially following the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) which have revealed that the UK Economy swung back into contraction in the final quarter of 2011; registering a 0.5% decline (a 0.5% increase had been predicted). The ONS put the figures down to the coldest December in 100 years. If the information is correct the UK Economy may have ground to a halt even before the effects January’s VAT Increase (from 17.5% to 20%) have been felt and fears over a ‘double dip’ recession will once again emerge.

The Chief Executive of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, Kevin Green, said that “The economy is still predicted to grow by just over two per cent during 2011 but while this won\’t drive huge job creation, it will be enough for the jobs market to remain positive. However this does clearly show that the Government must do more to stimulate growth and job creation. The one million young people not in work or education is a critical issue that must be addressed quickly to avoid a lost generation. To address this, an incentive to private sector employers to hire young people must now be considered urgently.”

Mobile Phone Payment Systems expected by end of 2011

Contactless payment technology has been around for a while in countries such as Japan and South Korea however it has yet to take off in the western world. However, with more and more contactless payment readers popping up around the UK, mainly spurred on by the Governments intention to make transactions at the 2012 Olympics hassle free, the time now appears to be right for the wide scale implementation of the technology. Systems under development use Near Field Communications (NFC), a short-range wireless technology similar to contact payment cards offered by existing retailers.
