REC to voice Recruitment Community concerns over Immigration Cap

Representatives of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) have been invited to a roundtable meeting with the Immigration Minister Damian Green this evening. The high profile body which represents recruitment agencies across the country will call for an ‘immigration policy that reflects the needs of the UK jobs market’.

20,000 people killed by jobs each year says TUC

A new ‘Case for Health and Safety’ report by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) says that on average 20,000 people are killed prematurely by their jobs each year.

Job Surveys suggest demand holds for new staff however Hays say this is due to ‘Job Churn’ not ‘Job Creation’

The latest Reed Job Index survey has found that demand for staff held steady in August even though the month is usually very quiet. The results found that small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) were especially optimistic about their prospects. The results offered hope to those that would like to see the private sector pick up the slack left by large public sector cutbacks which are expected to bite later this year and into 2011. However, the positive mood at Reed contrasted sharply with Hays, with the Chief Executive said that the surge in recruitment levels had been down to employers replacing staff lost in the recession, not out and out job creation. Earlier Hays reported disastrous 2009 trading results with an 80% fall in annual profits.

Hays says recruitment surge due to ‘job churn’ not job creation

The Chief Executive of Hays, one of the biggest recruitment agencies in the United Kingdom has said that the recent surge in recruitment levels has been down to employers replacing staff lost in the recession, not out and out job creation. The comments follow earlier suggestions that private companies would not be able to pick up the slack left by public sector cutbacks.

Expats leaving the UK would worsen Skill Shortages say TUC

Following a recent survey that suggests migrant workers are considering leaving the UK to return home in the wake of the financial crisis a spokesperson for the Trade Union Congress has said that this could worsen existing skill shortages. At present many skilled and highly skilled professions are already detailed on the UK Border Agency’s Shortage Occupation List however this is expected to worsen should many of the existing shortage workers decide to return home. The Government is being encouraged to create new drives to skill the resident labour market while also putting in place a flexible migration system to allow those in high demand into the UK.

Migrant Workers consider returning home due to Economic Downturn

A new survey has revealed that a proportion of migrant workers based in the United Kingdom have considered moving home in the wake of the economic crisis. The survey of 3,100 expats in 100 countries conducted by Expat Explorer found that 20% of expats working in the UK had seriously considered moving home and believed that the economy in the UK had worsened since the start of 2009. However, expats based in foreign countries were proving resilient with 87% saying they wouldn’t relocate even though the economy in their current location had deteriorated.

Standard Life follows RBS in announcing job cuts

Standard Life, the life assurance and pensions business, has followed the Royal Bank of Scotland by announcing the loss of at least 500 contract and permanent jobs over the next 15 months. The jobs cuts are expected to largely affect the Edinburgh and Glasgow regions with plans to axe at least 100 IT Contract jobs. Standard Life said that the jobs loss was due to its drive to slim down operations following the recent sale of its banking and healthcare divisions.

RBS to make further cuts into Contract and Permanent workforce

The Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) has announced that it will make further cuts into its Contract and Permanent workforce with plans to shed a further 3,500 jobs in the United Kingdom. The next stage of the ‘efficiency drive’ at RBS follows the axing of 9,000 jobs at the part nationalised bank back in April this year. RBS said that headcount would fall by 1,000 at Technology Services and by 2,500 at Business Services and that the bank planned to close 12 sites that deal with IT and card processing (based in Leeds, Bolton, Enfield, Harrogate, Norwich, Bradford, Telford, Plymouth, Milton Keynes, Liverpool, Bristol and Borehamwood).

Engineering Skills Shortage Predicted by Siemens Human Resources Director

The Human Resources Director for the Energy Sector at Siemens, the largest engineering conglomerate in Europe, has predicted major skill shortages in the Engineering Sector in the future as the United Kingdom adapts to a ‘new energy age and low carbon agenda’. Many engineering positions are already considered to be officially in shortage by the UK Border Agency especially those roles related to energy jobs; however problems are set to increase as demands for clean energy intensify in the future.

UK Recruitment Firms Planning Overseas Operations due to shaky UK Economy

According to a recent survey by the Association of Professional Staffing Companies (APSCO) more than 33% of UK recruiters are planning to expand into Europe within the next 12 months and 20% are considering expending outside of the European Economic Area. Key target markets outside of Europe included South Africa and India.
