£800 Million to be saved in Government Outsourcing & IT Supply Contracts

The nineteen biggest service providers to the public sector, including IBM, Serco, British Telecom and Capita are to meet the Government once more this week to discuss renegotiating supply contracts in an effort to save the treasury more than £800 million. The companies are expected to discuss ways to shrink previously agreed government contracts by de-scoping agreements.

New Wipro Datacentre improves ability to compete for outsourcing business

Wipro, the Indian Information Technology giant, has agreed a deal with Citibank to take over the management of its datacentre in Germany, giving the company its first large scale datacentre resource in Europe. The takeover will allow Wipro to compete with other large organisations (such as Tata, Infosys, Mahindra Satyam etc) who believe a great deal of outsourcing contracts will be agreed over the next few years as private and public sector clients find ways to improve performance and reduce operating costs.

Google has added ‘Collaborative Highlighting’ to Google Docs in an effort to make the web based application even easier to use. The search engine giant has been keen to improve Google Docs as it is included in Google Apps, the business orientated package of online software now used by many multinational companies. Recently Google also improved its Gmail application in order to work with the iPad.

2010 sees record low number of Information Technology deals

According to Ovum 2010 has seen the lowest number of Information Communication Technology deals since 2002 with 276 deals in Europe in the first half of 2010 compared with 308 deals in 2009. However the total value of those deals has increased due to some very large contracts.

Government Information Technology fastest growing technology sector in 2010 according to Gartner

According to Gartner, the Information Technology research and advisory firm, the global Government Information Technology Sector will be the fastest growing in 2010 however software firms are being advised to target niche areas in 2011 in order to counter stagnating commercial IT markets and increasing Governmental austerity programmes. The projections look at the global Information Technology market rather than the one in the United Kingdom where IT cutbacks are already having a major impact on software supplier firms.

SMEs see Information Technology as a Contractor role rather than an in-house position

According to a recent survey carried out by PeoplePerHour.com Small to Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the United Kingdom see Information Technology as a Contractor function rather than an in house role. However, although this is good news for the UK Contacting community many of the skills in demand are related to web based applications, meaning a significant amount of work can be off-shored to low cost areas such as India, where technical skills are high and resources plentiful.

UK Government should outsource IT work to India according to Ovum

The UK Government is being urged to outsource expensive Information Technology processes to India in an effort to significantly reduce costs and generally improve efficiency and performance. Following the recession and the formation of the new Conservative / Liberal Democrat Coalition Government departments are under real pressure to reduce operating costs by as much as 40% in order to save much needed cash. These developments have prompted Ovum, an Information Communication Technology advisory company to urge Government Departments to turn to Indian outsourcers to achieve savings.

CISx Computer System Scrapped by Government

Plans to turn the Department of Work and Pensions Customer Information System (CIS) into a citizen database which would be shared amongst all government departments have been scrapped. The CIXs central data sharing project, through which the personal records of everyone in the country could be shared, was scrapped following three years in which system designers were unable to find a cost effective way of linking the system with other government systems. The Department of Work and Pensions has said that the plans were dropped following the Governments decision to axe the National Identity Scheme (ID Card Scheme) back in May.
