BMA advises NHS Trusts to check EEA Doctors English Language Qualification

The British Medical Association (BMA) has warned National Health Service (NHS) Trusts to check English Language qualifications closely following the announcement by the General Medical Council (GMC) that registrations to doctors who graduated abroad rose by more than a quarter between January and June, including an extra 270 from within the European Economic Area (EEA).

NHS Mortgage will make it difficult for Trusts to achieve savings

Fears are growing across the country that the so called ‘NHS Mortgage’ will make it more difficult for NHS Trusts to achieve cost savings without cutting the number of frontline doctors and nurses. Figure obtained by the BBC show that the National Health Service faces a £65 Billion bill for new hospitals built under the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) with economists fearing that rising repayment fees will make it harder to achieve required cost savings.

Shortage of Allergy Specialists in NHS alarming says BSACI

The British Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI) has said that children suffering from food allergies are at risk of misdiagnosis due to a shortage of trained experts. The society called for an increase in the number of allergy centres and trained allergists to work in them however this will likely take years to achieve due to training times. National Heath Service Trusts are already finding it difficult to bring it skilled workers due to the temporary Immigration Cap and trained allergists from abroad are not being given the same priority as senior frontline doctors.

500 NHS Managers and Administrators face redundancy in North East

NHS North East has said that 500 managers and administrators face redundancy in a shake up of the National Health Service in the North East of England, which included Wearside, Tyneside, Teeside and County Durham. The cuts are expected to reduce staff costs by a total £27 million per year once delivered. Unison, the second largest trade union in the United Kingdom, expressed concern at the plans.

NHS Chief Executives offered £130k to resign

The Health Service Journal has reported that Chief Executives and top managers in the National Health Service (NHS) have been offered a £130,000 golden goodbye if they opt to resign voluntarily before October this year. The Health Service Journal reported that NHS managers were sent a letter by Sir Neil McKay, chief executive of the NHS East of England Strategic Health Authority, in which he outlined details of the Mutually Agreed Resignation Scheme (known as MARS).

NHS Trusts spent £300 Million plus on Consultancy Services in 2009

It has been revealed that NHS Trusts in England spent more than £300 million in 2009 on external consultancy services. The money was spent on consultancy services including human resources and legal services. The spending has been defended by NHS managers however it has been attacked by leading industry figures including Dr Peter Carter of the Royal College of Nursing. The £300 million figure equates to roughly 0.5% of the overall National Health Service budget.

Biggest increase in NHS complaints in over a decade

It has been announced that there were more than 100,000 complaints against the National Health Service (NHS) in 2009 / 2010, a 13.4% increase on 2008 / 2009. The results mean that the National Health Service has seen the biggest number of complaints since records began over 10 years ago.

NHS National Programme for IT set for major scale back

It looks as though the hugely expensive NHS National Programme for IT (NPfIT) and Connecting for Health (CfH) will be scaled back significantly following a government review of major IT projects. Much of Connecting for Health’s existing mandate is expected to be given to the Technology Office at the Department of Health Informatics Directorate and in place of large initiatives such as the National Programme for IT more responsibility will be given to local authorities.

NHS Trusts increasingly using social networking & videoconferencing

NHS Trusts under extreme pressure to reduce costs while improving performance are increasingly turning to technology in order to achieve goals. For example the Gateshead NHS Foundation Trust recently began using social media site Justvisiting.com to update family and friends on a patient’s wellbeing thereby reducing time spent taking long, time consuming phone calls from concerned relatives. And in surgical training a number of trusts have turned to videoconferencing in order to reduce travel costs and boost revenue.

Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust loses 112 patient records at bus stop

The Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals NHS Trust lost more than 100 patient records at a bus stop near the hospital, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has found. The ICO said that an unencrypted CD without password protection was lost which contained sensitive, yet old medical information relating to 112 patients.
