Tier 4 Criteria May Be Increased Following Announcement Of Student Visa Review

The Minister for Immigration, Damian Green, has announced a review of Tier 4 of the points based system following figures were released showing a further increase in the number of migrants coming to the UK each year on Student Visas. The Student Visa route has long concerned the Conservatives and the prior Labour Government. The announcement will undoubtedly lead to further tightening of the legislation surrounding Tier 4 of the Points Based System.

Speaking on Tier 4 (Student) Damian Green said that “We are committed to attracting the brightest and the best to the United Kingdom, and welcome legitimate students coming here for study. However, in the past there has been significant abuse of the student route, and we need to ensure that every student who comes to the UK is genuine. Therefore I am undertaking a thorough evaluation of the student system over the coming weeks and months and I will introduce new measures to minimise abuse and tighten the system further.”

Tier 4 was kept outside the recent temporary Immigration Cap implementation which saw Tier 1 General and Tier 2 General applicants from outside the UK capped until next April when the permanent cap is implemented.
