IT Contract Market Surging Ahead

The Managing Director of IT recruiter Jenrick recently said that “Our clients have been motivated to engage IT contract expertise to re-boot projects that have been in the doldrums. With all the signs that the UK is in the throes of recovery, clients find they have a need to regain their competitive edge and ‘steal a march’ on other players in their sector.” And Lee Berridge of the Recrutiment and Employment Confederation also commented, saying that “The end of the recession has brought about change for companies and that creates work for IT. So while virtualisation is being undertaken at some, other companies are upgrading. In terms of their systems, Windows 7 was slow to take off and is only kicking in now, and the same can be said of Exchange 2010. In some cases, managers have been have been forced to hire contractors due to the fact that hiring restrictions have been placed on permanent workers.”

The IT Contracts Manager at Jenrick also said that “From feedback we have received and project briefings we have attended this quarter, we believe growth is set to continue in the IT contract sector. However, there are clients who are examining the possibility of securing their IT knowledge by attempting to convert contractors into permanent employees. Or they’re looking to replace contractors with permanent employees over the course of this year.”

The latest JobsOutlook survey (conducted by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation) showed that employer confidence rose once again in March and this has impacted on short and long term hiring intentions. The Confidence Index now stands at its highest point since April 2010, a three month consecutive increase. The news follows the REC’s earlier calls for on the Government to support employment growth throughout the United Kingdom by creating a ‘budget for jobs’. Recently the Chancellor signalled intent with the announcement that a 21st century version of ‘Enterprise Zones’ would be created however the REC want the Government to go further.
