Education in the UK

Education in the UK is free but compulsory with school attendances starting at age 5 (attendance begins at 4 in Northern Ireland) and continuing up until age 16.

If you plan to enrol a child with a school you should be aware of your legal responsibilities and requirements. You as the parent have responsibility for your child’s attendance record and ensuring that your child arrives at school on time each day throughout the whole school year. If you fail to do this there is the possibility of prosecution.

Primary School

Primary School is attended by children aged 5 to 11 in England and Wales, 5 to 12 in Scotland and 4 to 11 in Northern Ireland. Children are normally taught in a mixed gender environment and one teacher teaches the group for the entire day. The primary school your child attends is normally the one closest to where you live.

Secondary Schools

Once a child has completed Primary School they continue their education in a larger Secondary School. Once again children are normally taught in a mixed gender environment although same sex schools are available in certain areas. Children continue their mandatory education up until the age of 16 when they complete their GCSE exams.

For information on which schools are available to you and for information on the process of applying for a secondary school you should contact you Local Education Authority (LEA).

Public Schools

If you do not want to send your child to a state school you can pay for alternative teaching at a Public School (know overseas as a ‘Private School’). If you choose to do this you do so at your own expense.
