What is Tier 2 Work Permit Sponsorship?
Tier 2 of the Points Based Immigration System (PBS) is divided into 4 sub-categories:
- General
- Intra Company Transfer (ICT)
- Sports People
- Ministers of Religion
This guide relates to Tier 2 General, formerly the Business & Commercial Work Permit Scheme.
The General sub-category of Tier 2 is designed for skilled workers with an offer of employment from a Tier 2 Licensed UK Employer. A job offer can be made once the sponsor has established that it cannot find a suitable resident worker for the job; it does this by conducting a Resident Labour Market Search (except in the case of Shortage Occupations). Once all recruitment procedures have been satisfied the sponsor can issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) to the worker.
The prospective employee then uses the Certificate of Sponsorship to apply for a Tier 2 (General) visa. Please note that a Certificate of Sponsorship does not guarantee a Tier 2 visa will be approved as applicants must gain enough points to qualify (70 points are required overall including the mandatory English Language & Maintenance requirements.
