Information for Recruitment Agencies
Many Recruitment Agencies now find that in order to satisfy client requirements they have to look to high level candidates with cutting edge skills from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). If you’re a Recruitment Agency and you want to be able to deal with non EEA candidates with niche skills such as SAP, Oracle Applications, Sarbanes-Oxley etc you need to understand what work can and cannot be undertaken on a UK work visa. You also need to know what options exist for a client that is interested in recruiting a non EEA national. We work with OISC registered professionals to help you through these minefields.
Commonwealth Contractors may be able to help you if you want to
- Help a client to sponsor a potential employee on a UK work permit
- Outsource a project to a 3rd party supplier (who may where required provide work permit sponsorship)
- Find out more about other UK Work Visas (Tier 1 (HSMP), Ancestry, Working Holiday Visa, Student Visa etc)

Recruitment Agencies Sponsoring Work Permits
If you’re a Recruitment Agency you may be disappointed to find out that you’re not allowed to sponsor a work permit to employ a temporary worker placed on a client site. The Border and Immigration Agency (the arm of the Home Office that deals with work permit applications) will not approve a work permit where the employment is for the supply of personnel. You therefore have three options:
- Help the Client to provide work permit sponsorship
- Outsource the work in the form of a Managed Project to a Consultancy
- Consider an alternative work visa such as a Tier 1 (HSMP) (or an alternative candidate from the EU – the rules are designed to make it a bit of a hassle to use non-EU nationals, so you choose an EU option first if one is available)
Helping a Client Sponsor a Work Permit
If your client wishes to recruit a highly skilled non EEA worker on a permanent basis they will have to undertake a work permit application (if the candidate does not qualify for an alternative work visa). It is highly recommended that a suitable OISC registered immigration firm is used to take care of the application as rejections can be both time consuming and costly. At Commonwealth Contractors we work with OISC registered immigration specialists that can help ensure work permit applications succeed. Outsourcing a Managed Project to a Consultancy
Many clients find they need to undertake projects that require cutting edge skills for a limited period of time. The problem is that certain high level niche skills are difficult to find in the EEA so more and more clients are turning to non EEA workers. Where a worker does not qualify for a Tier 1 (HSMP), Ancestry Visa, Working Holiday Visa etc the client has two options. They can decide to take on the worker on a permanent basis and make a work permit application or outsource the project to suitable consultancy. At Commonwealth Contractors we work with a number of Consultancies that regularly take on Managed Projects. In order to continually satisfy client requirements they recruit internationally and are prepared where appropriate to provide work permit sponsorship.
