Solutions for Expat Consultants:
Tier 1 Umbrella
A Tier 1 (HSMP) approval is initially valid for 3 years, although a 2 year extension is available. In order to secure the extension a consultant must have been using an appropriate structure to deal with contract income!
Many Consultants fall into the trap of using a Contractor Limited Company (Personal Service Company) or standard Umbrella Company & then find that contract income doesn’t qualify for a Tier 1 extension. At Commonwealth Contractors we can help to ensure that your Consultants put the most ‘back in their pockets’ while also ensuring Tier 1 qualification!
Tier 1 Applications / Extensions

Tier 2 (Work Permit) Sponsorship
Many highly skilled consultants no longer qualify for a Tier 1 visa due to the minimum Masters Degree requirement introduced in April 2009.
At Commonwealth Contractors out Consultancy Partners may be prepared, where required, to sponsor skilled Consultants & assign them to client facing assignments. A Tier 2 visa can be a great alternative to a Tier 1 (HSMP) visa!
Tier 5 Umbrella
Australians & New Zealanders on Tier 5 visas (formerly Working Holiday Visas) want to do one of two things:
- (1) To work towards a future Tier 1 or Tier 2 Visa application, OR
- (2) To maximise Project Income for 2 years and then go home
Contractor Limited Companies
Expat Consultants should only use Contractor Limited Companies (Personal Service Companies) in certain circumstances.
