Tier 1 (Highly Skilled) Visas
If you have a Masters Qualification or better & you earn a highly skilled wage you stand a good chance of securing a Tier 1 General Visa (formerly HSMP).
To qualify for a Tier 1 (General) visa you need to gain 75 points from 4 points scoring categories and satisfy the English Language & Maintenance Requirements. Once approved a Tier 1 Visa will allow you to work unrestricted for an initial period of 3 years, following which time it may be possible to gain a 2 year extension and work towards Permanent Residence after 5 years.
US Nationals qualify fully against the English Language Requirement (US Passport required) and due to a relatively good exchange rate it is not that difficult to validate the Maintenance Requirement (£2,800 required roughly equates to $4,650 US).
