Consulting in Europe on a Tier 1 Visa
The European Union (EU) is becoming an important place to do business for many highly skilled IT Consultants. If you hold a Tier 1 (General) visa you may have the technical skills & abilities to undertake a project but, frustratingly, you may be let down by your visa status. At Commonwealth Contractors we can help!
In the last few years many high profile organisations have relocated from the UK to other areas of the European Union (EU), many driven out by ever increasing taxes! These organisations have led to a significant increase in the number of IT assignments being offered in:
- Germany
- The Republic of Ireland
- Belgium
- The Netherlands
If you hold a Tier 1 (General) Visa you will be aware that the visa does not grant you permission to work in any country other than the UK. You can visit other European countries if you secure a Schengen Visa, but you cannot work.
As an Individual your hands are tied, however as part of a large & established organisation you may be able to deliver services compliantly.

At Commonwealth Contractors we partner with OISC Registered Private Immigration Firms & Tier 2 Licensed IT Consultancies. Considerations when Consulting in Europe
Visa ProcessingVisa processing times vary from country to country, although on the whole the vast majority of visas are processed within 10 working days.
Billing in Euros:
Most European Clients pay in Euros which means that a currency conversion must be applied to a payment. This can be good or bad depending upon the exchange rate at the time.
Please be aware that banks charge for currency conversions (normally £30). Any charges come out of professional billings.
Tax Implications:
If you are consulting in another European country for more than 6 months you may incur a foreign tax liability. Please investigate tax implications fully before agreeing to a long term assignment.
UK Permanent Residence:
Permanent Residence in the UK is normally secured after completing 5 full years on a qualifying visa (e.g. Tier 1 Visa, Tier 2 Visa). If you are outside the UK for more than 90 days in any one year your Permanent Residence run may be reset. However, it may be possible to argue against this depending upon the circumstances.
